VA - Spring event -- any news?

From: be ma (bema57@hotmail.com) | Date: 2003-03-28 12:32:09 UTC
Hi everyone! Have we come to any conclusion about planning an mini spring
event for the kids (old and young!)?

I think Riverbend would also be a great location. It has four or five boxes
at least. We can even form a search party to solve the mystery of the
missing Billy Goats Gruff microbox (taken only a few days after it was
planted).

Please let us know if we can help organize or whatever! BeMa

Hello! I went to check out Fountainhead Park with Daughter of the Old
Dominion and am waiting to find out about reserving its picnic pavilion for
Saturday, May 31. It will cost $60 to reserve it for a half day. That date
wouldn't conflict with Fairfax County spring break and should be okay for
school kids. I didn't think Riverbend had a picnic area and I thought
something with a central area would be good for us to all meet, eat and
exchange. If I can get the reservation, would others be willing to chip in
on the cost of the pavilion?

_____I'd better say at the outset that the 5 remaining boxes in Riverbend Park
are mine. That out of the way, there is a large picnic area between the Visitors
Center building and the river; what the rules and/or costs of reserving it are I
don't know. All 5 boxes can be accessed from the Visitors Center area; the
ones listed under the Nature Center are just upriver from Muskrat Ramble and
therefore a longer walk.

I would certainly be willing to contribute to the reservation costs
and a pot luck picnic. I notice it is not Memorial Day weekend,
which will help. It always rains on Memorial Day weekend. :-)

Riverbend has some picnic tables but I doubt they take
reservations.

Riverbend has a couple of different picnic locations. There is one grouping
of four or five right by the nature center (bathrooms -- yippee) There are
also several down along the river on the way toward "Possum Trot" (I think
that is the one). I have no idea about reservations, but could call and
ask.

Are you all sure that Fountainhead Park is more centrally located? Isn't it
quite far out? We have some folks from MD who were thinking of attending.

Just some thoughts. BeMa

ooops - P.S. I think D and Shoo mentioned that Montgomery County and
Fairfax County have spring break at the same time this year. Just wanted to
mention that planning it for a weekend of Spring break (avoiding the
holidays) might not be such a bad idea if not too many people are going out
of town. In this way, we would probably avoid conflicting with the Little
League and soccer games and various lessons that would be on a normal
weekend. Just more thinking (ow! That's a lot of thinking for one day...)

-Riverbend does not have a covered pavillion,so they probably don't charge a
fee or take reservations, although they may do that at the Nature Center.
Anyway, at the Visitors Center you'd have to bring a tarp, just in case.

would we meet in the rain or just do a rain date? I've never been to a
gathering, so, I'm not really sure what the "weather policy" is....

What do people do? Meet, greet, eat (I'm sure). Does everyone go in search
of boxes together or just fan out on their own? BeMa

---I have heard from a few Marylanders that are rooting for Riverbend
as a place to meet. Yeah we meet, greet and eat. Actually the fun is
in the meet part. Passing around personal logbooks for exchanges get
quite crazy. Which reminds me - the last meet/great in Columbia I
didn't get Trekerjo's stamp. Talked with her for a while but plum
forgot. So Jo we need to meet again!
I might have a tarp.
I definitely will hunt for boxes as that's the only time I get out
of state!
